THE CARD AS TEXT · FOR EYES AND FOR MACHINES

THE UNDERSTUDY CARD · everything standing in, labelled

WAKES WHEN a site or page is about to be handed over, or someone asks if its fonts are real

THE LOOP

  1. tokens · what the brand declares
  2. fonts · served, or standing in
  3. scan · fonts, colours, files, words
  4. label or replace every stand-in
  5. scan again; the report rides along

NEVER

  • Call a font real that is only assumed
  • Fetch a font or a file from another host
  • Pass a build whose list it has not shown

IT MAKES scan — every stand-in, by kind and file; fonts — each named font: served, or standing in and why; tokens — the colours and fonts a tokens file declares.

THE STANDARD label what stands in; served means beside; the tokens decide colour; named means present; draft words out; read, never fetched.

CITE THIS CARDTHE UNDERSTUDY CARD, Edition 1. Lund Studio LLC, Westminster, Colorado. https://lundr.tech/?view=understudy-card. Punch 48D0454DE535DAB52D5F6EBA. Retrieved 2026-10-11.

What it is.

Reads a web build (HTML, CSS, SVG, Liquid, JS, Markdown) for its stand-ins. scan lists the fonts a page names that no @font-face serves from beside the build, the hex colours that are not in the tokens file (#fff and #FFFFFF read as one), the pictures, fonts, styles and scripts named in src, href or url() that are not on disk, and the placeholder words left in (lorem ipsum, TODO, TBD, FIXME, an empty link), and writes the list as a report; fonts says for each named font whether it is served or standing in; tokens reads a CSS or JSON tokens file back.

It carries a machine that shows its working: scan — every stand-in, by kind and file; fonts — each named font: served, or standing in and why; tokens — the colours and fonts a tokens file declares — 8 checks in its selftest, every command on the record. It will never call a font real that is only assumed; never fetch a font or a file from another host; never pass a build whose list it has not shown.

Six laws, written into the card.

They are in the card itself, so the AI follows them.

LABEL WHAT STANDS INAnything that only pretends to be there is listed before it is mistaken for the real thing.
SERVED MEANS BESIDEA font is real when an @font-face serves its file from beside the build; fetched or assumed is standing in.
THE TOKENS DECIDE COLOURA colour not in the tokens file is typed by hand; with no tokens file, every colour is listed as typed.
NAMED MEANS PRESENTA file named in src, href or url() must be on disk beside the build.
DRAFT WORDS OUTlorem ipsum, TODO, TBD, FIXME, XXX and an empty link are left-overs; an input's placeholder is not.
READ, NEVER FETCHEDNothing is downloaded; a file on another host is named, not checked.

What rides in the card.

In the card’s own voice, with a machine that shows its working.

THE GUIDEreferences/THE-STAND-INS.md
THE MACHINEunderstudy.py · three commandsscan — every stand-in, by kind and file; fonts — each named font: served, or standing in and why; tokens — the colours and fonts a tokens file declares. Every command prints its working and refuses a bad input; 8 checks in its selftest, every command on the record.

What it does once your AI has it.

  • scan Every stand-in, by kind and file
  • fonts Each named font: served, or standing in and why
  • tokens The colours and fonts a tokens file declares
  • On the record The tokens file declares three colours and one font. The page has two fonts standing in (Space Grotesk, named and never served beside the build, and Ledger Mono, whose @font-face file is missing), one colour off the tokens (#E23D8F, while #fff reads as the token #FFFFFF), two missing files and two placeholder lines, seven stand-ins in all; the clean page reads nothing stands in, and a folder that is not there is refused.

What it will never do.

It will never call a font real that is only assumed; never fetch a font or a file from another host; never pass a build whose list it has not shown.

It reads files as text with patterns, not with a browser: a font set by a script at run time, or a colour written as rgb() or a name, is not seen. Common system fonts are treated as fallbacks and not counted. Links to pages (not files) are THE RIGGING CARD's. A rebuild of the September 2026 machine from its recorded source; the fonts and tokens commands, and the check that an @font-face file is really there, are new in this edition. It is an AI reading a text file: it can be wrong, so check what matters against your own records and the source.

QUESTIONS AT THE TABLE

Asked before the wire.

What does it need from me?

Tokens · what the brand declares. It asks first for the build folder or files, and the tokens file if the brand has one.

Does it send anything anywhere?

No. The machine is a standard-library Python program that runs on your own computer and sends nothing anywhere; the words run wherever an AI reads Markdown. No server, no account, no key.

What is on the record?

The self-test (8/8) and every command run on real example inputs, pasted into WITNESS.md as they printed; the punch on the face is the SHA-256 of SKILL.md, so a downloaded copy can be checked against this room.

Can it be wrong?

Yes — it is an AI reading a text file.

What will it never do?

It will never call a font real that is only assumed; never fetch a font or a file from another host; never pass a build whose list it has not shown.
