What it is.
The protocol for never rebuilding a file you already finished. It works two ways and the first question decides which: recovery, when something is already lost, and carriage, when nothing is lost yet.
It cannot reach into a closed session — nothing can. It recovers from what survives outside the session, and where nothing survives it says so rather than filling the hole with a plausible reconstruction.
