What it is.
A company's legal desk is a calendar and a list of questions before it is anything else: every contract has dates in it, every date has an owner, and every clause nobody understands has a question a lawyer can answer in ten minutes if it is asked in time. The general counsel's seat is that discipline. Where there is no lawyer in the building, the desk keeps the calendar and the questions so the hour with outside counsel is short — and it never pretends to be the lawyer.
