THE DEEPFAKE CHECK CARD · a file's content record, read before trust
WAKES WHEN someone is about to trust or share a photo, a voice clip or a video
THE LOOP
inspect · the record, inside the file
read what is there and what is missing
verdict · one plain line a file
folder · a whole folder, counted
verify a record with a full validator
NEVER
Say a file is fake or real from its pixels
Call a record found a record verified
Read "no record" as proof of a fake
IT MAKES inspect — what is there, what is missing, the verdict; verdict — one line a file; folder — a folder, counted by verdict.
THE STANDARD the record, never the pixels; three plain verdicts; found is not verified; unsigned words, said so; no record proves nothing; damaged is cannot tell.

IT CAN BE WRONG an AI reading a text file: it can be wrong and can invent a number, a rule, a name or a date; check what matters against your own records and the source; the risk is yours. THE-CLAUSES.md rides in the packet and is part of the licence.

What it is.
Images, audio and video checked for their content record before they are trusted. inspect reads inside one file for content credentials (a C2PA store in JUMBF boxes: JPEG APP11 segments, the PNG caBX chunk, the MP4 or MOV uuid box, the WAV, AVI or WebP C2PA chunk) and for XMP provenance fields, and says what is there (the manifests, the claim and the tool that made it, the signature, the assertions and actions, the digital source type in plain words) and what is missing; verdict gives one line a file: has a record, no record, or cannot tell; folder does a whole folder and counts them. It never claims to detect fakes from pixels or sound, and says so on every run; it does not check a record's signature. It waits on content records being common: most files carry none today, so "no record" proves nothing.
It carries a machine that shows its working: inspect — what is there, what is missing, the verdict; verdict — one line a file; folder — a folder, counted by verdict — 8 checks in its selftest, every command on the record. It will never say a file is fake or real from its pixels; never call a record found a record verified; never read "no record" as proof of a fake.
Six laws, written into the card.
They are in the card itself, so the AI follows them.
THE RECORD, NEVER THE PIXELSIt reads the file's record and never judges pixels or sound, so it never says a file is fake or real.
THREE PLAIN VERDICTSHas a record, no record, or cannot tell; nothing in between.
FOUND IS NOT VERIFIEDIt reads the record's parts but does not check its signature; a record found is a record to verify.
UNSIGNED WORDS, SAID SOXMP fields alone are reported as unsigned words anyone can write, change or remove.
NO RECORD PROVES NOTHINGMost files carry none today; a stripped record is named when the file still points to it.
DAMAGED IS CANNOT TELLA file cut short, failing its own checks, or of a kind it does not read is never guessed.
What rides in the card.
In the card’s own voice, with a machine that shows its working.

THE MACHINEdeepfakecheck.py · three commandsinspect — what is there, what is missing, the verdict; verdict — one line a file; folder — a folder, counted by verdict. Every command prints its working and refuses a bad input; 8 checks in its selftest, every command on the record.
What it does once your AI has it.
inspect What is there, what is missing, the verdict
verdict One line a file
folder A folder, counted by verdict
On the record A JPEG carrying content credentials has a record: one manifest, its claim made with test-maker 1.0, a signature (not checked), two assertions, and a source type that says it was made by a trained model; a PNG with XMP fields only has a record of unsigned words; an MP4 record is missing its claim signature. Across eight files: 4 have a record, 2 have none (one with its stripped record named), and 2 cannot tell (a JPEG cut short and an MP3 the check does not read); no verdict ever says fake or real.
What it will never do.
It will never say a file is fake or real from its pixels; never call a record found a record verified; never read "no record" as proof of a fake.
It waits on content records being common; most files carry none today, and many platforms strip them on upload. It reads the record as the C2PA specification lays it out and does not check the signature, the certificate or the hashes that bind the record to the pixels; a full validator does that. It never detects fakes from pixels or sound. It is an AI reading a text file: it can be wrong, so check what matters against your own records and the source.

One payment. The file is yours to keep and keeps working at its edition; new editions issued in the year after you buy reach you by email as replacement files. Tax is added at checkout where it applies. Nothing auto-renews.

QUESTIONS AT THE TABLE
Asked before the wire.
What does it need from me?
Inspect · the record, inside the file. It asks first for the image, sound or video files (JPEG, PNG, MP4 or MOV, WAV, AVI or WebP), or the folder they are in.
Does it send anything anywhere?
No. The machine is a standard-library Python program that runs on your own computer and sends nothing anywhere; the words run wherever an AI reads Markdown. No server, no account, no key.
What is on the record?
The self-test (8/8) and every command run on real example inputs, pasted into WITNESS.md as they printed; the punch on the face is the SHA-256 of SKILL.md, so a downloaded copy can be checked against this room.
Can it be wrong?
Yes — it is an AI reading a text file. It waits on content records being common; most files carry none today, and many platforms strip them on upload. It reads the record as the C2PA specification lays it out and does not check the signature, the certificate or the hashes that bind the record to the pixels; a full validator does that. It never detects fakes from pixels or sound.
What will it never do?
It will never say a file is fake or real from its pixels; never call a record found a record verified; never read "no record" as proof of a fake.
