What it is.
The commerce doctrine "one ledger, many doors" as a method with checks. laws gives the four laws (one ledger, many doors; rent, not rake; nothing hidden; leave whenever), the doors a shop sells through and the order they arrive in; check reads a platform plan against the four laws and names each break: a door on a second book, a door before its book, a percentage take, a fee with no source or date, a book that cannot leave; board reads a competitor price board, sets aside any price not read from a named source on a stated date, and names stale reads; rake works out what a share of every sale costs against a flat rent, and where they cross.
It carries a machine that shows its working: laws — the four laws, the doors and the road; check — each law kept or broken, by name; the doors in the order they arrive; board — unsourced prices set aside, stale reads named; rake — a share of sales against a rent, and where they cross — 8 checks in its selftest, every command on the record. It will never type a price that was not read and dated; never call a share of every sale a rent; never rule on payment law: counsel does.
Six laws, written into the card.
They are in the card itself, so the AI follows them.
ONE LEDGER, MANY DOORSEvery door writes to one book, and the book arrives before the first door.
RENT, NOT RAKEThe platform charges a flat rent and takes no share of a sale; each rail is paid at its own rate.
NOTHING HIDDENEvery fee carries its source and the date it was read, printed on the line, on a chained book.
LEAVE WHENEVERThe whole book leaves as CSV or JSON, any day, with its chain.
READ, NOT TYPEDA price on a board carries its source and the date it was read; one without is set aside.
COUNSEL'S QUESTIONSMoney transmission, payment rules and platform terms go to counsel before a door opens.
What rides in the card.
In the card’s own voice, with a machine that shows its working.

What it does once your AI has it.
laws The four laws, the doors and the road
check Each law kept or broken, by name; the doors in the order they arrive
board Unsourced prices set aside, stale reads named
rake A share of sales against a rent, and where they cross
On the record A plan on one chained book with a flat rent kept all four laws; one with a desk on a second book, a 1.5% take and an unsourced fee broke three; the board set aside one unsourced price and named one read 120 days old; 2.9% of 20,000 a month is 580 against a rent of 39, crossing at 1,344.83 of sales; sales of "lots" were refused.
What it will never do.
It will never type a price that was not read and dated; never call a share of every sale a rent; never rule on payment law: counsel does.
A rebuild of the doctrine recorded on 9 and 10 Sept 2026, which carried no machine of its own; town.py is new in this edition. check reads only what a plan states and cannot see a live platform; board judges rows by their columns, and whether a source is honest is for a person to read. The arithmetic is arithmetic, not legal, tax or financial advice. It is an AI reading a text file: it can be wrong, so check what matters against your own records and the source.

laws · THE FOUR LAWS, THE DOORS AND THE ROAD
$ python3 scripts/town.py laws
1 · ONE LEDGER, MANY DOORS
The counter, the road, the site, the wholesale desk, an agent buying under a mandate and the maker table are doors, not systems. A sale is a sale whichever door it came through; stock is one number, and the book refuses the sale it cannot cover.
a plan keeps it when every door writes to the one book, and the book arrives no later than the first door
2 · RENT, NOT RAKE
The shop pays a flat rent. The platform takes no percentage of a sale; each payment rail is paid at its own published rate, printed on the line, into the merchant's own account.
a plan keeps it when the platform's take is a flat rent, never a percentage of sales
3 · NOTHING HIDDEN
Every fee, hold and refusal is written down when it happens and witnessed on a hash chain; a changed cent breaks the chain at that line, and anyone can verify the whole book.
a plan keeps it when every rail a door uses has its fee written, with the source it was read from and the date, printed on the line; the book is chained
4 · LEAVE WHENEVER
The book, the stock, the customers and the site leave as one file, any day, with the chain intact.
a plan keeps it when the whole book exports as CSV or JSON, with its chain
the doors the doctrine draws, with the edition each arrives in:
E3 · the counter the till at a fixed address; a reader, or the phone itself · rails: card present · tap to pay · witnessed cash · bitcoin
E3 · the road the phone at a market, an expo or a pop-up; no hardware · rails: tap to pay · cash · bitcoin
E2 · the storefront the web shop · rails: card online · bitcoin
E4 · the desk wholesale by invoice, on terms · rails: card online · bank transfer · stablecoin · bitcoin
E4 · the mandate an agent buying under a signed mandate · rails: a scoped card token · stablecoin
E4 · the table a makers' marketplace beside the shop · rails: card online · bitcoin · stablecoin

rake · A SHARE OF SALES AGAINST A RENT, AND WHERE THEY CROSS
$ python3 scripts/town.py rake 20000 --percent 2.9 --rent 39
sales of USD 20,000.00 a month · a take of 2.9%
the rake costs USD 580.00 a month, USD 6,960.00 a year, and grows with every sale
a flat rent of USD 39.00 a month is USD 468.00 a year, whatever is sold
at these sales the rake costs USD 541.00 a month more than the rent
they cross at USD 1,344.83 of monthly sales; above it, rent is cheaper
arithmetic on your own figures, not advice
rake · A SHARE OF SALES AGAINST A RENT, AND WHERE THEY CROSS
$ python3 scripts/town.py rake lots --percent 2
the monthly sales must be a number, not 'lots'

QUESTIONS AT THE TABLE
Asked before the wire.
What does it need from me?
Laws · the four, and the doors. It asks first for the platform plan (its book, its doors with their rails, how it charges, and each fee with its source and date), or the competitor board as CSV.
Does it send anything anywhere?
No. The machine is a standard-library Python program that runs on your own computer and sends nothing anywhere; the words run wherever an AI reads Markdown. No server, no account, no key.
What is on the record?
The self-test (8/8) and every command run on real example inputs, pasted into WITNESS.md as they printed; the punch on the face is the SHA-256 of SKILL.md, so a downloaded copy can be checked against this room.
Can it be wrong?
Yes — it is an AI reading a text file.
What will it never do?
It will never type a price that was not read and dated; never call a share of every sale a rent; never rule on payment law: counsel does.
