THE REFRACTION CARD — the LSC-1 face
THE CARD AS TEXT · FOR EYES AND FOR MACHINES

THE REFRACTION CARD · light bending between materials

WAKES WHEN someone asks about bending light, fibre, apparent depth, diamonds or rainbows

THE LOOP

  1. bend <angle> <from> <to> · the far side
  2. critical <material> · trapped past it
  3. depth <depth> <material> · how deep
  4. rainbow · both bows, colour by colour
  5. say the index is for one colour

NEVER

  • Bend light that is turned back whole
  • Give an index without saying for which light
  • Measure angles from the surface, unsaid

IT MAKES bend — the far-side angle, or total reflection; critical — the critical angle; depth — the apparent depth; rainbow — both bows, colour by colour; materials — the indices it knows.

THE STANDARD from the perpendicular; least time; turned back whole; colours differ; both bows; named or numbered.

CITE THIS CARDTHE REFRACTION CARD, Edition 1. Lund Studio LLC, Westminster, Colorado. https://lundr.tech/?view=refraction-card. Punch 53312BC902730E69D3AA76DC. Retrieved 2026-10-11.

What it is.

Works out the sine law of refraction, light taking the path of least time across a boundary: bend gives the angle on the far side or says the light is turned back whole; critical gives the angle past which light cannot leave a material, the trick of optical fibre and of a diamond's sparkle; depth gives how deep water or glass looks from above; rainbow gives the angles of the first and second bows from water's index, colour by colour, showing why the colours reverse; materials lists the indices it knows.

It carries a machine that shows its working: bend — the far-side angle, or total reflection; critical — the critical angle; depth — the apparent depth; rainbow — both bows, colour by colour; materials — the indices it knows — 8 checks in its selftest, every command on the record. It will never bend light that is turned back whole; never give an index without saying for which light; never measure angles from the surface, unsaid. It never helps design, make, grow, enhance or spread a pathogen or toxin, or plan work meant to harm.

Six laws, written into the card.

They are in the card itself, so the AI follows them.

FROM THE PERPENDICULAREvery angle is measured from the line straight through the surface, and the card says so.
LEAST TIMEThe bent path is the quickest one for light; THE LEAST ACTION CARD shows the same idea for motion.
TURNED BACK WHOLEPast the critical angle no light gets out; the card says so instead of printing an angle.
COLOURS DIFFERWater's index changes with colour, which spreads a rainbow; the card uses five measured values.
BOTH BOWSThe second rainbow sits near 51° with its colours reversed; the dark band between them is real.
NAMED OR NUMBEREDMaterials by name or by index; an index under 1 is refused.

What rides in the card.

In the card’s own voice, with a machine that shows its working.

THE GUIDEreferences/THE-LAWS.md
THE MACHINErefraction.py · five commandsbend — the far-side angle, or total reflection; critical — the critical angle; depth — the apparent depth; rainbow — both bows, colour by colour; materials — the indices it knows. Every command prints its working and refuses a bad input; 8 checks in its selftest, every command on the record.

What it does once your AI has it.

  • bend The far-side angle, or total reflection
  • critical The critical angle
  • depth The apparent depth
  • rainbow Both bows, colour by colour
  • materials The indices it knows
  • On the record Light at 30° into water bends to 22°; from inside water at 60° it is turned back whole; diamond traps light past 24.4°; 2 m of water looks 1.5 m deep; the first bow from 40.7° (violet) to 42.4° (red), the second reversed near 51°; and the indices it knows.

What it will never do.

It will never bend light that is turned back whole; never give an index without saying for which light; never measure angles from the surface, unsaid. It never helps design, make, grow, enhance or spread a pathogen or toxin, or plan work meant to harm.

Flat boundaries and single rays: lenses, curved surfaces and how bright each ray is are out of its reach. Indices are typical values for yellow light unless given. It is an AI reading a text file: it can be wrong, so check what matters against your own records and the source.

bend · THE FAR-SIDE ANGLE, OR TOTAL REFLECTION
$ python3 scripts/refraction.py bend 30 air water
30° from air (n 1.00029) into water (n 1.333): bends to 22.04° from the perpendicular, toward it

critical · THE CRITICAL ANGLE
$ python3 scripts/refraction.py critical diamond
from diamond (n 2.417) into n 1.00029: the critical angle is 24.45°; light striking more steeply than that stays inside

QUESTIONS AT THE TABLE

Asked before the wire.

What does it need from me?

Bend <angle> <from> <to> · the far side. It asks first for the angle from the perpendicular and the two materials; or a material; or a depth; or nothing, for the rainbow.

Does it send anything anywhere?

No. The machine is a standard-library Python program that runs on your own computer and sends nothing anywhere; the words run wherever an AI reads Markdown. No server, no account, no key.

What is on the record?

The self-test (8/8) and every command run on real example inputs, pasted into WITNESS.md as they printed; the punch on the face is the SHA-256 of SKILL.md, so a downloaded copy can be checked against this room.

Can it be wrong?

Yes — it is an AI reading a text file. Flat boundaries and single rays: lenses, curved surfaces and how bright each ray is are out of its reach. Indices are typical values for yellow light unless given.

What will it never do?

It will never bend light that is turned back whole; never give an index without saying for which light; never measure angles from the surface, unsaid. It never helps design, make, grow, enhance or spread a pathogen or toxin, or plan work meant to harm.
